“Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare...For thus says the Lord: Only when Babylon’s seventy years are completed will I visit you, and I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place. For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.”
For every other weekend of our lives in 1995, my brother and I came with our Dad and one of his friends to help renovate a house in the Heights. It’s down on Petty street and even after all these years, it still looks good. I was 10 years old and my brother was 9 so my Dad thought he had to bribe us to get us to help work on this house with him. Every other Saturday when we were done, we’d stop at the gas station and get a nice cold can of Coca-Cola. This was back when they were 50 cents which to a 10 year old seemed like a huge splurge. On the weekends when we worked really hard, sometimes we would get one of those little bags of individual potato chips. But what I never told my Dad was that he didn’t have to bribe us with Cokes and fritos. I didn’t work to get the reward, the work itself was rewarding, my brother and I had a blast ripping out nails and then watching the house come back together. Heights Presbyterian is rebuilding this sanctuary for the welfare of their community- so that the Heights neighborhood may have a place where they can come and meet with God. The task that has been undertaken is daunting, it must be made step by step. It’s not a destination we’re after, but a journey with God, and God’s people. We don’t do ministry for the rewards and yet somehow along the way, we find out that we are blessed, as we meet real human needs, as we deepen bonds of fellowship, as we meet Christ in one another. Come join us, through this blog, and every Sunday in worship at 11am, as we watch how God is moving in this church and in this neighborhood!
